Hi! I'm so happy you're joining me here as we work to help children become strong readers and writers! I am Brenda Rodgers, M.Ed., owner of Read Write Literacy Specialists. I believe students learn to read and write best when their instruction is direct, systematic, explicit, and based on a multisensory approach. This approach to instruction benefits typical learners and those with learning differences such as dyslexia. Through my tutoring services and online content, I hope to help your children and students become the readers and writers they are meant to be! Learn More Here ...

It’s #dyslexiaawareness month, so here are a few It’s #dyslexiaawareness month, so here are a few fast facts for you. When I talk to parents of a child who I either suspect has dyslexia or who has a new diagnosis, I try to convince them that “It’s ok!”, “They’re perfect just the way they are!”, and “They’re going to be fine!” To varying degrees, it’s not easy. BUT there’s a lot of hope. And it means nothing more than the brain operates in a way that requires a certain type of literacy instruction - and a lot of it. So be encouraged! Dyslexia can be a gift! #dyslexiaawareness #dyslexiatutoring #structuredliteracy #readingspecialist #readinginstruction #homeschoolreading
These hang in the learning lab where I teach, and These hang in the learning lab where I teach, and they’re such a encouragement. When I meet a parent of a newly diagnosed child or a middle or high schooler who has a new diagnosis and feels pretty defeated and self-conscious and “not right”, this is the first conversation I have with them. Guess what? It has nothing to do with intelligence. Guess what? Your brain just functions a little differently and we have to work around that. Guess what? You’re fearfully and wonderfully made. And guess what? You’re going to do amazing things! 📚 #readwriteliteracy #dyslexia #adhd #ortongillingham #reading #scienceofreading

Such a gift, the ability to read. One that we take for granted. So today, I’m thankful not only for the ability to read, but the opportunity to help children become readers. Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃

Sound Drill time with my little one! Sound drills Sound Drill time with my little one! Sound drills are essential to a reading lesson when any new sound/letter combinations are taught. So it’s not just for the basic 26 letters, but also needs to be used when learning blends, digraphs, etc.

Sound Drills activate the phonologic (sound) and orthographic (sound/symbol correspondence) processors. We want the sound/letter correspondence to be automatic and fluent so that students aren’t spending their mental energy trying to figure out the sound of every letter in a word.

Orthographic processing is a key predictor of reading fluency. So we need explicit, systematic instruction so students can build it. We need the sound drill! 📚😀
